the time, something I did nothing with until now.  The source list at the bottom of this page shows where this information came from.

1.  Caliph CONNER was born about 1747 in Ireland.1 

From the Conner family website 2009 - "This family history begins as Caliph Conner crossed the Atlantic to the new world, America. His name would indicate that he was a native of the green isle of Erin. He made his home in the Keyston State, Pennsylvania, and became a prominent farmer there. He followed this pursuit until his death. There is no known information about his wife. Caliph had two sons, the eldest died in Pennsylvania at a young age. We do not have his name. The younger son, James, was born in 1775 and lived in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania where he married Jane Brooks, also born and raised in Pennsylvania."

2.  James CONNER (Caliph-1) was born in 1775 in PA.1  He died in 1863 in Iroquois, Iroquois Co, IL.1 

The information sent to me says, "After the family was gone from home James lived with a daughter in Iroquois, Illinois until he death in 1863 at the age of 88.  James and his family also lived on Ohio."

     From the Conner family website 2009 - "Jane preceded James in death and after the children were all gone from home, he lived with a daughter in Iroquois County, Illinois until his death at the age of 88.
     In early life he had learned the trade of a stone and brick mason, and also weaving, but during the greater part of his business career he carried on agricultural pursuits. In politics he was a staunch Democrat, yet never aspired to office. Reared in the faith of the Presbyterian church, he always adhered to that doctrine, and was a man of stern disposition and sturdy integrity.      Both James' and Jane's fathers were soldiers of the Revolutionary War.
     We only have lineage for James and Ella. There is no further information for Agnes, Susanna,Elizabeth, Mary or John. Then begins the lineage of William Brooks Conner."

It appears James's daughters, Susanna and Elizabeth, may have married two Frogg brothers.

3.  James CONNER (James-2, Caliph-1) was born in 1813 in Hamilton, Butler Co, OH.1 

The information sent to me shows James lived and died in Ness County Kansas.  It also says he had two or three more children than shown here.
     From the Conner website 2009 -"Born in Ohio but moved to Ness County KS where he married, had two children when his wife died. We have no information on his first wife. We're presuming Elliot and Alfred were from this union."
     His son, Charles, and any additional children would have been with his wife Sarah.

James CONNER and (Nfn) (CONNER) were married about 1833 in Ness Co, KS.1  (Nfn) (CONNER) was born about 1814 in an unknown location.  James CONNER and (Nfn) (CONNER) had the following children:

8.  Mary CONNER (James-2, Caliph-1) was born in 1823 in Hamilton, Butler Co, OH.1

Mary CONNER and J. WADKINS were married about 1842 in an unknown location.1  J. WADKINS was born about 1822 in an unknown location.

9.  William Brooks (Judge) CONNER (James-2, Caliph-1) was born on Apr 7, 1825 in Hamilton, Butler Co, OH.1  He died on Feb 3, 1908 in Lyons, Rice Co, KS.1  He is buried in Lyons Municipal Cemetery. 

William enlisted and fought in the Civil War.  He moved to Rice Co, KS about 1872.  This would be about a year after his second son moved there.
     From the 1965 Helen Conner's book - "William Brooks Conner, Judge Conner to many, was an early pioneer of Rice County having emigrated from Illinois about 1872.  When he was four years old he moved with his parents from Ohio to Indiana.  He remained with his parents until he was eighteen when he went to Will County, Illinois and secured a claim.  A few years later he moved to Iowa, his home for two years.  He returned to Will County Illinois but after a few years decided to move to Rice County, Kansas.  While in Indiana William married his first wife, Betsey who was born in Ohio but was reared in Indiana.  Betsey is mentioned as being a devout member of the Methodist church having joined when she was eight years old.  William's parents were Presbyterians who always adhered to the doctrines of their church.  Williams's father, James, was a man of stern disposition and sturdy integrity in politics as a Democrat.
     Not long after the family arrival in Rice County, William's oldest daughter, Matilda, married William H. Rife and about a month after this marriage her mother, Betsey, died.  The following year William married his second wife, Elizabeth, who was a widow with two children, Mary Etta and Wesley Ambrose.
     William came to Rice County about the time of it's organization.  He was nominated for the office of probate judge and was elected by a large majority (the second person chosen for office of probate judge in Rice County).  During early life William had studied law.  He was the first young man admitted to the bar in Rice County but he never practiced law to any extent.  While serving as probate judge, the family lived in Atlanta (now Lyons).  He also served as township treasurer for two terms and acted as chairman of the organizational meeting that established Mitchell School District 76.  His signature appears on these organization papers.
     Although reared as a Democrat, Judge Conner joined the Republican party when it was organized in 1856.  He was a delegate to the first county Republican convention in Rice County.
     During his last years on this homestead farm he enjoyed sitting in front of the home watching his friends and neighbors traveling by.  Often times they would stop to chat for a few minutes.  He suffered a sun stroke which greatly weakened his body and he remained in poor health until his death in 1908 at the age of 83 years."

William Brooks (Judge) CONNER and Rebecca Ann (Betsey) MULLEN were married on Dec 10, 1844 in IN.1  Rebecca Ann (Betsey) MULLEN (daughter of Samuel MULLEN and Matilda KELSEY) was born on Feb 27, 1825 in OH.  She died on Nov 6, 1872 in Rice Co, KS.1  She is buried in Lyons Municipal Cemetery.  William Brooks (Judge) CONNER and Rebecca Ann (Betsey) MULLEN had the following children:

                                 From the 1963 Helen Conner book - "Link lived in Sonora Mexico in 1890.  He corresponded with his father my mail for four or five years then the letters ceased.  Presumed his was killed or died."

William Brooks (Judge) CONNER and Elizabeth Sabine AMBROSE were married on Mar 16, 1873 in Lyons, Rice Co, KS.1  Elizabeth Sabine AMBROSE (daughter of Owen JOHN and Sarah Jane REED) was born on Feb 18, 1846 in OH.1  She died on May 26, 1940 in Tujunga, LosAngeles Co, CA.1 

The 1965 Helen Conner book shows this name as Elizabeth Sabine Ambrose.  Other information sent to me does show her maiden name was Elizabeth Sabine John and that she was previously married to Jack Ambrose.  A note says the original spelling of this name was John, not Johns as sometimes spelled.  She was a widow when she married William and had two children during her first marriage, Mary Etta and Charles Wesley Ambrose.

                                  From the 1965 Helen Conner book - "Stella will be 90 years old in 1966.  She was unmarried.  Lives in a deaconess home in Los Angeles, CA where she had served in her younger years.  She also was a chiropractor doctor."

The information sent to me shows Charles's wife, Ida, was the great grand-daughter of his aunt Ellan Conner/Richardson.

From the Conner family website 2009 - "James enlisted in the Union Army and fought in the Civil War.  His name appears as one of the trustees on the Mitchell Church cornerstone."

James Samuel (Jim) CONNER and Anna RODY were married on Feb 14, 1871 in Judson, IL.1  Anna RODY was born about 1848 in NY.1  She died on Feb 24, 1886 in IL.1  Her death date is also shown as April 24, 1886 in another page of the information sent to me.  James Samuel (Jim) CONNER and Anna RODY had the following children:

                                  From the 1965 Helen Conner book - "Mary was never married.  She kept house for her father and the family while they lived near Mitchell.  She was a practice nurse and assisted at births many times.  She lived with the Jesse Leathermans in Sterling, KS for a time after her father died in 1925.  She lived with her very dear friend, Adah L. Nicholas, in Libertyville, IL from 1932 to 1943.  She is buried in the Nicholas family lot in Libertyvill, IL."

From the 1965 Helen Conner book - "John enlisted and fought in the Civil War at age 14.  He moved to Rice Co, KS by covered wagon about 1871.  John and his wife moved to Ness County Kansas for a few years then returned to Rice County.  John and Effie are both buried in the Lyons Municipal Cemetery."

John Kelsey CONNER and Effie Amanda CARNAHAN were married on May 16, 1874 in Rice Co, KS.1  Effie Amanda CARNAHAN (daughter of Joseph C. CARNAHAN and Hannah L. FRAZIER) was born on Mar 5, 1858 in IL.1  Another place in the information sent to me shows this birth date as March 8, 1858.  She died on Apr 20, 1906 in Rice Co, KS.1  John Kelsey CONNER and Effie Amanda CARNAHAN had the following children:

Matilda Jane CONNER and William H. (Will) RIFE were married on Oct 26, 1872 in Rice Co, KS.1  William H. (Will) RIFE was born on Aug 1, 1849 in OH.1  He died on Oct 22, 1927 in an unknown location.1 

From the 1965 Helen Conner book - "William and Betsey's brother John were among the earliest settlers in Rice County.  William came in 1870 and staked out a homestead on Cow Creek southwest of Lyons.  Matilda and William were charter members of the Mitchell Methodist church.  She was blind for about 15 years and also an invalid for several years after she fell and broke her hip."

16.  George W. CONNER (William Brooks-3, James-2, Caliph-1) was born on Mar 7, 1854 in IN.1  He died on Sep 11, 1909 in Winfield, Cowley Co, KS.1

He and Pearl moved from Reno County out to Richfield, KS in western Kansas before Kenneth was born. They lived in a dug out for awhile. He drove a freight wagon north to Syracuse and hauled freight back from the railroad there. It was a long drive and took several days to make the round trip. After Kenneth was born, before Pearletta arrived, they moved back to Reno County and lived around Sylvia and Arlington, KS. They didn't own a farm, but rented land in several places where he did farming. In later years they lived on a farm near Arlington. The old place was sold when they moved to Hutchinson and afterwards a tornado came through there so the house is no longer there."

Eula, my grandmother, provided me with a great deal of information on the Conner family which includes books she had printed.  Unfortunately, it was 15 years later before I decided to do anything with it.

Eula Madge CONNER and Fay Hamilton DIX were married in 1922 in Hutchinson, Harvey Co, KS.2  They were divorced in 1945 in Hutchinson, Harvey Co, KS.1  Fay Hamilton DIX (son of Arthur Dugold DIX and Sadie Oliva BURRIS) was born on Oct 15, 1900 in Hutchinson, Harvey Co, KS.2  He died about Oct  1978 in McAllen, Hildalgo Co, TX.2  He was buried about Oct  1978 in Memorial Park Cemetery. Hutchinson KS.2 

     Fay Dix was my grandfather.  He worked for the Santa Fe railroad as a mechanic most of his life until he retired.  I can remember my father and I going with him one night to fire up a steam engine which was due to leave.  I had not even started to school at the time but as we sat in that engine trembling from the boiling water, I worried about it exploding.  I even rode in the engine of what I used to call a "doodlebug".  A diesel passenger train with a flat front end.  I took may trips on the railroad as a small child, mainly because that was the best way to travel in those days and partially because I could ride free under his pass.
     After he retired, he and his wife at the time, Mary Beth Ballard, would travel to Donna, Texas to spend the winters.  They were what us Texans refer to as "Snow Birds", Yankees who migrate south for the winter.  He died during one of these trips.  I do not remember the exact date and neither does my mother.  Because of a divorce, I can not check any of my records.  A book on the Conner family, my grandmother, shows he died in 1974 but I know this is not correct.  My wife at the time and I did not have the money to fly to Harlingen at that point in time.  We also visited with him in Donna after that date.
     I flew into Harlingen, Texas a month or two before his death and went though Donna twice, once on the way to McAllen and once on the way back to Harlingen.  Because someone had picked us up at the airport and returned us, I did not have them stop so I could visit.  A decision I have regretted to this day.  Never, ever pass up a chance to visit with friend or family. We had flown down to pick up my wife's girls just before school started.  Mary Beth died about October 2008.
    After Fay and Eula divorced she married Jack Birket and they lived on his farm west of Hutchinson, Kansas where they raised chickens, turkeys, cattle and goats.  When they could no longer keep up the farm they bought a home in Hutchinson, KS.  Sometime later Jacks physical health declined to a point where he had to be placed in a nursing home.  Eula would go there several times a day to help take care of him until he died.  Eula remained in their home until she could no longer take care of herself.  She then agreed to move into a retirement home, along with her sister Wilma, where they could be taken care of.

She was careful with her diet and followed any orders scrupulously. It seemed that she got it totally under control. However in 1993, her melanoma came back and grew very rapidly, this time in her head and she expired within a few short weeks from diagnosis."

Wilma CONNER and Vernon (Vern) JOSEPHSON were married about 1925 in an unknown location.1  They were divorced about 1962 in Hutchinson, Harvey Co, KS.1  Vernon (Vern) JOSEPHSON was born about 1905 in an unknown location.  He died in 1964 in Wichita, Sedgwick Co, KS.2  He was buried in 1964 in Hutchinson, Harvey Co, KS.1 

Vern was a farmer for several years and then he and Wilma moved to Hutchinson, Kansas where he eventually owned a home construction business.  He built the very nice home he and Wilma lived in.  If I remember correctly, he died of health problems caused from alcoholism.

Wilma CONNER and Clifford WATSON were married on Sep 17, 1966 in Hutchinson, Harvey Co, KS.1  Clifford WATSON was born about 1905 in an unknown location.  He died in 1974 in Hutchinson, Harvey Co, KS.1 

Clifford worked for the Pan Handle Eastern Refining Company near Greensburg, Kansas most of his life.

Kenneth joined the Civilian Conservation Corps during the depression; was instrumental in converting Cessna aircraft from wooden to metal fighter airplanes throughout WWII; was a cabinet and trim contractor in Wichita KS and Branson MO; worked at Silver Dollar City where he built their first reproduction of the Conestoga Wagon; worked at Shepherd of the Hills Farm where he crafted blacksmith and wheelwright products; displayed all manner of hand crafted wood products and demonstrated dulcimers built by his own hands at Mutton Hollow and Coffelt Corner. After Lou Ella passed, he moved to a Senior Community where he immediately became "the" handyman for many that were less capable but usually younger than he. He stayed active to the last few weeks of life when it was discovered he had developed a cancer on the outside of his lungs, the type that is usually attributed to exposure to asbestos. Many homes were sided with asbestos shingles and no one realized that cutting them on the table saw and breathing the dust could be detrimental to ones health."

She was a fantastic dress designer and pattern maker, making almost all of the clothes for her girls and herself as well as for herself and her family as she was growing up. She also made several wedding dresses for sisters and sisters-in-law.  Physically she remained fit and able to walk rings around her daughters until the final stroke that took her life. She was an extremely remarkable woman, wife, mother and friend to all she met."

Applying for a landscape job, they said they had experience (they had cut down trees on the farm), remodeling houses (they had cleaned out and refinished a chicken coop), and did just about any job they could find.
     Finally getting a job with a local construction company gave him experience for the kind of work he'd do the rest of his life. Joining Fluor Corp., he started out as a laborer, then concrete foreman and finally ending his career as Superindent with 30 years with the same company."

From the Conner family website 2009 - "Merwin was called "Bud" or "Buddy" by family members. Only sibling to graduate from college. Served as a cook in the Navy. He lived for awhile in California. He more or less kept his adult life a secret from his siblings. Last seen by family members in the late ''50's, he disappeared and was presumed dead. The family hired a private detective to search for him when his father passed away and again a year later when his mother passed away, but he found no trace of Bud. His nephew, Bill, found the information that he died in Anchorage in 1999 on the internet. His second wife, Kam, said he was a heavy smoker and had severe lung problems.  He is buried in the Naval cemetery in Anchorage, AK."

In 1958, with the addition of a mobile home, it became the home of their son Delmar and wife Neoma, where Lester and Delmar owned and operated the LeDel Dairy Farm of Lyons KS. In 1964, Delmar replaced the mobile home with a three bedroom traditional design home. Long time residents say the site of this new house is approximately that of the first small homestead house that William Brooks Conner built. Since the death of Lester and Helen, the site continues to be the home of Delmar and Neoma, where he continues to operate the dairy farm. In a note from Lester dated March 1, 1980 he includes the Rife homestead with the three Conner homes and four generations farming 800 acres, 50 Registered Holsteins milked daily and Breeding stock sold all over the world."

       Skeet attended college for a while but quit when WWII broke out and joined the Army Air Force where he trained as a pilot.  My mother and I followed him from one base to another when ever possible; hence, I lived in four different states before starting school.  When the war was over, dad open a shoe shop in Little River, Kansas but soon found this was not what he wanted to do and returned to school.  He would teach through the school year and we would move to a college town through the summer.  We did this for several years until he graduated with a masters degree.
        At some time he became tired of the problems of teaching (parents) and became an insurance salesman for a short while.  About 1951 he took a job teaching at the Oklahoma State Reformatory in Granite, Oklahoma.  I don't know if his mother living there had anything to do with it or not but it worked out great.
        From here he held several different positions with the State including warden of a minimum security prison near Lexington, Oklahoma.  He retired about 1985 and went to work playing golf.
        Dad had a lot of problems with his heart off and on and in 1983, had a triple bypass done.  He gave up smoking after this but had to have the same surgery again in 1994.  His health continued to decline over the years an eventually had to have dialysis among other problems.  He died on my birthday, April 27, 2000.  He no longer has to suffer the pains of old age.

After taking college courses in Anatomy & Physiology as well as Pharmacology, then some advanced computer classes, I became a medical transcriptionist. Later, I became Medical Records Supervisor. For over 20+ years, the Hospital was my "second home". Mother and Cecil moved to the Leisure Homestead in the 90's, after her Alzheimers prevented them living at home. It was next door to the hospital, so I could visit her at least twice a day.
