59. GEORGE (1820)4 IMBODEN (John3, Johannes2, Johannes Schweickert1) was born on Mar 29, 1820 in Staunton, Augusta Co, VA.2 He was listed as the head in the census in Jun 1900 taken in Maries Co, MO. He died on Nov 15, 1902 in Grove Dale, Maries Co, MO.2
After George and Elizabeth were married, they rented a farm near Kaolin, Iron Co. Missouri where their two oldest sons were born. They then moved to Grove Dale, Maries Co. Missouri where they purchased a farm. They remained here until their deaths. According to the article by Mr. Lucas in the Bellevue book, George had a 10th child which was male. This child must have died in infancy since he can not be found in the census soundex lists. The name of George's wife appears to be Lina in the 1900 soundex but shows the same birth year. It is possible this was another nickname and may have been Liza.
George (1820) IMBODEN and Elizabeth Ann HUGHES were married on Mar 20, 1845 in Washington Co, MO.2,24 Elizabeth Ann HUGHES was born on Aug 4, 1825 in Washington Co, MO.2 She was listed as a wife in the census in Jun 1900 taken in Maries Co, MO. Rufus IMBODEN and Sallie (1861) (IMBODEN) were married about 1881 in MO.14

was born on Aug 13, 1836 in Washington Co, MO.2 He was listed as the head in the census in Jun 1880 taken in Logan, Randolph Co, MO. He died on Nov 4, 1921 in Ellington, Reynolds Co, MO.2Thomas's wife and three children died in 1896, two of the children on the same day. Mr Lucas, writer of the article in the Bellevue book believes they may have died of typhoid fever.
Mr. Lucas makes no mention of John, Thomas's oldest son. John is shown in the 1880 Soundex as living with his family. The 1900 Soundex lists a John Imboden in the "state lunatic asylum No. 1" age 31 born in 1869. The only family in Missouri this John could fit in is that of Thomas Imboden. The age and year born is also very close. His daughter Lula was enumerated with her grandfather Robert Patterson in the 1900 soundex.
There is another possibility here. This is information sent to me by Ingrid. This is an item in THE SALEM DAILY NEWS, (Salem, OH) October 17, 1896.
PROBABLY KILLED HIS FAMILY
MORE CRIMES SUSPECTED OF THE MISSOURI
TRIPLE MURDERERPiedmont, MO. Oct. 17 - It is believed that the killing of his sister, his brother
and old man Wilhelm by an ax in the hands of John Imboden, in Reynolds county,
is but the sequel to the sudden deaths last May of Imboden's wife and two small
children, all of whom died with a week and whom it is now thought, Imboden poisoned. The prisoner is closely guarded in the Reynolds County Jail at Centerville. Imboden is
a prominent farmer.

The 1900 soundex lists a John Imboden born MO. 1869 as a resident of the "State Lunatic Asylum No. 1." It appears this is the same John. The Bellevue article does not list John as a child of Thomas D. but the 1880 census does. See the notes for his father, Thomas D., for the complete story of what really happened here.

Ralph Weeks Lucas was the great grandson of Philip Lucas. Ralph wrote the article in the Bellevue book from which I obtained a lot of information on the Imboden family. He also wrote a letter to my grandparents in the 40's or 50's which also had a lot of my family history asking for information on their part of the Imboden family which they never answered. This was the start of my genealogy research. Mary Margaret IMBODEN and Philip LUCAS had the following children:

He was listed as the head in the census in Jun 1900 taken in Washington Co, MO. He was listed as the father in the census in Jan 1920 taken in Caledonia, Washington Co, MO. He died on Apr 21, 1926 in Washington Co, MO.2 He was buried about Apr 24, 1926 in Bellevue Presbyterian Cemetery, Caledonia, MO.2From the Bellevue article by Ruth McFarland-Bean, "Having sold the Cedar Creek farm, Dabney and son William bought the old "Baker property" at Alum Cave community where Dabney died. His wife Malvina preceded him in death in 1903. Both Dabney and his wife are buried in Bellevue Presbyterian Cemetery in Caladonia, MO. William and wife Lena, Dewey and wife Hattie, lived at Alum Cave until 1930 whin Claude McFarland and wife Lula bought the farm. William had a new home built in Bismarck and lived there his remaining years. When Phillip and Molly lived on a part of the Cedar Creek farm, it was known as "The Sugar Camp," a number of sugar maples were tapped for the making of maple sugar. Phillip and Molly later moved to Bismarck and at one time ran "The Old Hotel." In later years they lived in Granite City, Illinois where the men of the family worked at the Rolling Mills there. After Mollie's death Phillip made his home with his daughter Lula and family at Alum Cave, where he died.
"Aunt Jenny" Imboden Sutherland and husband, Walter, moved from Bismarck to Madison, Illinois where they spent most of their lives. Jenny later returned to Bismarck and lived near her brother, Bill. The earlier Imbodens are buried in the Bellevue Presbyterian Cemetery, but Dabney's children are buried at The Odd Fellows Cemetery at Bismarck. Samuel was my (Ruth McFarland-Bean, author of this article) great, great grandfather and Dabney was my great grandfather. Phillip was my grandfather.
A niece, Jennie Jones, was enumerated with Dabney in the 1880 census and another niece, Mary Taylor, was enumerated in the 1900 census.
Dabney was enumerated in the 1920 census at age 85 living with his son William D. Imboden.
Dabney Samuel IMBODEN and Elizabeth (IMBODEN) were married about 1852 in Washington Co, MO.2,14 Elizabeth (IMBODEN) was born in Apr 1832 in TN.2,14 She was listed as a wife in the census in Jun 1880 taken in Bellevue, Washington Co, MO. She was listed as a wife in the census in Jun 1900 taken in Washington Co, MO. She was buried about 1903 in Bellevue Presbyterian Cemetery, Caledonia, MO.2 She died about 1903 in Washington Co, MO.2

John Imboden
From Lawrence County Historical Quarterly Vol. 5 No. 1.
John's father-in-law, William Black, came to Randolph county from Kentucky with his father in 1815 and they settled on the Black farm on Eleven Point River.
According to Goodspeed, John was elected sheriff of Randolph County from 1842 to 1844. The Imboden Centennial shows John had only five children but the census records for 1850 and 1860 indicate there were two other children, Mary E. and Birdie, for a total of seven. The centennial article is for the most part accurate but I have found several other discrepancies.
The 1850 census shows John as a farmer with a real estate value of $2,400. The 1860 census shows a real estate value of $12,000 and a personal estate value of $900. John had died by 1870 and his wife is listed with a personal value of only $500.
John H. IMBODEN and Margurite S. BLACK were married on May 7, 1845 in Randolph Co, AR.13,25,27,28 Margurite S. BLACK (daughter of William BLACK) was born in 1826 in Lawrence Co, AR.13,14,25 She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1850 taken in Randolph Co, AR. She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1860 taken in Randolph Co, AR. She was listed as the head in the census on Jun 14, 1870 taken in Randolph Co, AR. She died after 1870 in an unknown location.14 John H. IMBODEN and Margurite S. BLACK had the following children:
i. MARY E.5 was born about 1845 in Lawrence Co, AR.14 She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1850 taken in Randolph Co, AR.
The 1850 census lists Mary as a child of John. I have found no other record of this child. It is possible she died shortly after this census.
168 ii. LUTHER S. was born about 1848 iii. BLANCH was born in 1850 in Randolph Co, AR.14,25 She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1860 taken in Randolph Co, AR. She was listed as a household member in the census on Jun 14, 1870 taken in Randolph Co, AR.Blanch IMBODEN and John D. BROWN were married on Mar 25, 1875 in Randolph Co, AR.28 John D. BROWN28 was born about 1849 in an unknown location.
Attempts to find John in the census lists proved to be impossible. Half of the men in the US must have been named John Brown.
iv. LUCY was born about 1852 in Randolph Co, AR.14,25 She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1860 taken in Randolph Co, AR. She was listed as a household member in the census on Jun 14, 1870 taken in Randolph Co, AR. She was enumerated with her parents in the 1860 and 1870 census.Lucy IMBODEN and William H. MEANS were married on Feb 11, 1875 in Randolph Co, AR.28 William H. MEANS was born about 1851 in an unknown location. His birth date is estimated from his marriage date.
I was unable to locate William in any of the Arkansas census lists. It is possible they moved to another state.
v. BIRDIE was born in 1856 in Randolph Co, AR.14,25 She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1860 taken in Randolph Co, AR. She was listed as a household member in the census on Jun 14, 1870 taken in Randolph Co, AR. PATRICK H. was born on Aug 29, 1858 in Randolph Co, AR.14,25,26 He was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1860 taken in Randolph Co, AR. He was listed as a household member in the census on Jun 14, 1870 taken in Randolph Co, AR. He was enumerated with his parents in the 1860 and 1870 census. He died on Jul 24, 1888 in Randolph Co, AR.26 He was buried on Jul 26, 1888 in Masonic Cemetery, Pocahontas, Randolph Co, AR.26Patrick was accidently shot and killed while bird hunting in Randolph county west of Pocahontas. The Imboden Arkansas Centennial article makes no mention of Patrick having married but the book on Randolph county cemeteries lists a J. H. Imboden, wife of P. H. Imboden. It is almost a certainty that P. H. is Patrick H. in which case it appears he was married. Patrick is shown a dying in 1888 but the 1880 census does not list any Imbodens in Arkansas except for freed slaves who adopted this name at the time.
Patrick H. IMBODEN and J. H. (IMBODEN) were married about 1881 in Lawrence Co, AR.26 J. H. (IMBODEN) was born on Mar 15, 1861 in an unknown location.26 She died on Oct 1, 1899 in Randolph Co, AR.26 She was buried on Oct 4, 1899 in Masonic Cemetery, Pocahontas, Randolph Co, AR.26
vii. JOHN (1860) was born about 1860 in Randolph Co, AR.14,25 He was listed as a household member in the census on Jun 14, 1870 taken in Randolph Co, AR. He died about 1875 in Pocahantas, Randolph Co, AR.25John was never married and was severely injured in the machinery of the cotton gin in Pocahantas and later died of these injuries.
78. ANDREW H.4 IMBODEN (Benjamin3, Johannes2, Johannes Schweickert1) was born about 1820 in Caledonia, Washington Co, MO.13,14,25 He was listed as the head in the census in Jun 1850 taken in Lawrence Co, AR. He died on Mar 15, 1855 in Powhatan, Lawrence Co, AR.13,25
From the Arkansas Gazette of March 21, 1930, under the head-lines of "75 Years Ago," gives the following item: "March the 21, 1855, died at his home in the town of Powhatan, Lawrence County on the 15th, Capt. Andrew H. Imboden, in his 32nd year of age."
Andrew's will was dated March 6, 1855 and he died on the 15th. It appears he may have been sick or injured in battle and knew he would not survive.
From the centennial publication, "Andrew distinguished himself as a Captain in the Mexican War." He enrolled for the Mexican War June 18, 1846 in Smithville, AR. as a 1st Lt. He served in Co. C Ark Batt Inf & Marine and was elected Captain January 12, 1847.
According to the Centennial article Andrew was an attorney in Powhatan and was elected to the state legislature from this county in 1852. If he was, it must have been to complete the term of another legislator because his name does not appear in any of the state registers. The 1850 census shows Andrew was a merchant.
After his death, Lucinda was remarried to William B. Baird. The Centennial article indicates William was a Presbyterian minister who came from Kentucky but the 1860 census lists him as a merchant. They lived in Powhatan for many years.
Andrew's wife and Mary Elizabeth Ficklin, wife of Benjamin F., were sisters. Mary and another sister, Martha, were living with Andrew in 1850.
Martha Ficklin married John A. Lindsay and they were appointed guardians of Andrew's daughter, Martha, after Andrew died and before his wife was remarried to Mr. Baird. Apparently a single woman could not retain custody of a child in Arkansas.
Andrew H. IMBODEN and Lucinda Emiline FICKLIN were married in 1848 in Lawrence Co, AR.25 Lucinda Emiline FICKLIN (daughter of John A. FICKLIN) was born about 1830 in MO.13,25 She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1850 taken in Lawrence Co, AR. She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1860 taken in Lawrence Co, AR. Andrew H. IMBODEN and Lucinda Emiline FICKLIN had the following children:

She died about Oct 1854 in Lawrence Co, AR.13Margaret E. IMBODEN and William S. SMITH were married about 1839 in Lawrence Co, AR.13,14 William S. SMITH was born about 1812 in KY.14 He was listed as the head in the census in Jun 1850 taken in Lawrence Co, AR.
William was listed as a blacksmith in the 1850 census. Margaret E. IMBODEN and William S. SMITH had the following children:
i. WATSON L.5 was born about 1840 in Lawrence Co, AR.13,14 He was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1850 taken in Lawrence Co, AR.

80. JANE T.4 IMBODEN (Benjamin3, Johannes2, Johannes Schweickert1)
was born on Apr 8, 1824 in Caledonia, Washington Co, MO.13,25 She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1850 taken in Lawrence Co, AR. She was enumerated with her parents in the 1850 census. She was listed as the head in the census on Jun 14, 1870 taken in Randolph Co, AR. She died on Dec 30, 1896 in Imboden, Lawrence Co, AR.25,30From the Centennial article, Jane Imboden married John T. Bridges, who came with his parents from Missouri, to this county when a small boy. They settled on a farm on Spring River a few miles below here (Imboden, AR), where two children were born, George W. and Johnnie. Mr. Bridges died in 1854 and a few years later Mrs. Bridges married Wm. F. Furguson, a Captain in the Civil war, who owned a river farm two mile above Williford. Mr. Furguson died in 1865, soon after he returned from the war. Their only child was Willie, who married Wayman Phillips......
In 1867, Mrs. Bridges returned to the Bridges farm where she lived many years. Later, she came to Imboden, where she died in 1896, age 72.
The 1870 census lists Jane with a real estate value of $3,000. and personal estate value of $1,000.
Jane T. IMBODEN and John T. BRIDGES were married on Nov 11, 1850 in Lawrence Co, AR.13,25,29 John T. BRIDGES (son of John BRIDGES and Cyntha SPIVEY) was born about 1823 in Lawrence Co, AR.13,14,25 He was listed as the head in the census in Jun 1850 taken in Lawrence Co, AR. He died about 1858 in Lawrence Co, AR.49
According to the article by Mrs. Poindexter, John moved to Lawrence county with his parents from Missouri as a small boy. John and Jane settled on a farm on Spring River a few mile below here (Imboden, AR). She shows John Bridges died in 1854 but the 1870 census shows his son, George Bridges born in 1856 and his daughter,
Johnnie Bridges born in 1858. It appears this article was written from someones memory which was off a few years. John had died by 1970 and his wife is listed in this census as Jane Ferguson.
John Bridges enrolled in the Mexican War as a sargeant June 18, 1846 in Smithville, AK and served in Co. C Ark. Batt Inf & MR. He is shown in the 1850 census as a farmer. Jane T. IMBODEN and John T. BRIDGES had the following children:
i. JANE (1852)5 was born in 1852 in Lawrence Co, AR.30 She died in 1852 in Lawrence Co, AR.30 She was buried in 1852 in Imboden, Lawrence Co, AR.30 She is buried in the Hope Cemetery.

173 v. GEORGE (1856) was born March 3, 1856.
174 vi. SUSAN VIRGINIA (JOHNNIE) was born February 14, 1858.
Jane T. IMBODEN and William F. FERGUSON were married on Jan 21, 1863 in Randolph Co, AR.28 William F. FERGUSON was born about 1823 in an unknown location.25 He died in Jun 1865 in Near Williford, Sharp Co, AR.25 Jane T. IMBODEN and William F. FERGUSON had the following children:
i. LIZZIE5 was born in 1853 in Sharp Co, AR.14 She was listed as a household member in the census on Jun 14, 1870 taken in Randolph Co, AR.
Each census normally puts children in order by age. Lizzie was not in the proper order and may not actually be a daughter of William Ferguson. He was married before his marriage to Jane which may have caused Lizzie to be listed differently. Her mother was also married to John T. Bridges prior to William and Lizzie's last name may have also been Bridges.
175 ii. WILLIAM (WILLIE) was born about 186581. CATHERINE S.4 IMBODEN (Benjamin3, Johannes2, Johannes Schweickert1)
was born about 1837 in Lawrence Co, AR.13,14,25 She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1850 taken in Lawrence Co, AR. She was enumerated with her parents in the 1850 census. She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1860 taken in Lawrence Co, AR. She died before 1870 in Imboden, Lawrence Co, AR.14Catherine S. IMBODEN and Green R. JONES were married about 1856 in Lawrence Co, AR.14,25 Green R. JONES was born about 1823 in Lawrence Co, AR.14,25 He was listed as the head in the census in Jun 1860 taken in Lawrence Co, AR. He was listed as the head in the census on Jun 14, 1870 taken in Randolph Co, AR. He died after 1870 in Pocahantas, Randolph Co, AR.14
Green and Kate lived near Annieville, AR. He planted cedars around the property and small cedars up the drive and named the place Evergreen. About 1850, the Walnut Ridge and Smithville roads passed in front of the place. This would be about midway between Imboden and Walnut Ridge, AR. This was taken from an article written in 1944 which said the place burned down a few years back which must have been in the late 1930's. At the time of the article, some of the cedars were still growing.
The 1860 census lists Green with a real estate value of $3,000. and a personal real estate value of $5,000.
The 1870 census lists Green as a merchant with a real estate value of $3,000. and a personal real estate value of $10,000. It lists a woman named Mary age 48 (b.1822) born in Indiana living here, occupation housekeeper. The Goodspeed indicates Green married a woman named Nancy born 1829 in Nashville, TN some time after the Civil War. In any event, it appears Catherine died sometime before the 1870 census. Catherine S. IMBODEN and Green R. JONES had the following children:
176 i. MINNIE B.5 was born 1857
ii. MARY H. was born about 1858 in Imboden, Lawrence Co, AR.14,25 She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1860 taken in Lawrence Co, AR. Benjamin's wife, Mary, and Andrew's wife, Lucinda Emiline Ficklin, were sisters. The 1850 census shows a Mary and a Martha living with Andrew at the time. The Loose Probate papers indicate that a John A. Lindsay was married to a Martha Ficklin. I belive this is the Martha Ficklin he married and that this is the Mary Benjamin married. Her age also fits. The Randolph Co. Marriages show that Benjamin married a Mary Elezebeth Henderson. Mary was apparently previously married for a very short time before she married Benjamin although I could find no record of this marriage.
Benjamin is shown as an heir to part of his fathers estate in the Loose Probate Papers.
By 1866, about seven years after Benjamins death, Mary and their son Franklin moved to Maries Co. MO. The Loose Probate papers show a Joseph Dobbs appointed administrator of John A. Ficklin's estate January 2, 1877. It shows Joseph Dobbs, by right of his wife Mary E. Dobbs, as an heir to the estate of John A. Ficklin, Mary's father, and being from Maries Co., MO.
Benjamin Franklin IMBODEN and Mary Elezabeth FICKLIN were married on Dec 16, 1857 in Randolph Co, AR.25,28 Mary Elezabeth FICKLIN (daughter of John A. FICKLIN) was born about 1838 in Lawrence Co, AR.13,14,25 She was listed as a household member in the census in Jun 1850 taken in Lawrence Co, AR.
Mary was enumerated in the 1850 census in the household of Andrew Imboden. After returning to MO, Mary married two more times. First to either "Uncle" Charlie Rutledge or his brother, Joseph B. Rutledge. When this husband died, she then married Thompson Rutledge know as "Uncle Thomp." Benjamin Franklin IMBODEN and Mary Elezabeth FICKLIN had the following children:
178 i. FRANKLIN QUINTON5 was born January 31, 1859 and died November 16, 1921.

Grave site of John. I don't remember where I found this. From the list above, number 19 is the site where John is buried.
The 1850 census shows the value of John's real estate at $2,000 and by 1860 it had risen to $10,900 with a personal estate of $12,825 and in 1870, $15,000 and a personal estate of $2,000. From research by T. G. Hobbs, there are many deed records in the name of John D. Imboden in Augusta County records. He lived in Staunton until the war where he practiced law and was successful in his race for county clerk. He attended Washington College later known as Washington and Lee and built several buildings in Staunton, one being a law office on what was know as Lawyers Row in 1860. This date was reported by a Mr. T. C. Elder who was renovating the building in 1950 and uncovered a corner stone with this information. He was a Grand Master Mason and a member of the Virginia legislature. John was involved in the rehabilitation of Virginia after the war through development of natural resources, building railroads, pioneering the discovery of coal and the development and financing of coal mining companies.
John left the confederate army as a General after serving in the 18th Virginia Cavalry. From the Augusta Historical Bulletin 1965-68 Vol. 2; "With President Lincoln's April 15 call for three Virginia regiments to subdue the rebellion and with Governor Letcher's prompt reply that Virginia would supply not one man, the Secession Ordinance was a foregone conclusion. On secession day, John D. Imboden (a Captain at the time), having alerted Augusta companies by telegraph, brought a special train from Richmond, arriving in Staunton late that afternoon. In what is described as the most thrilling scene ever enacted in the county, a mammoth throng assembled at the railroad station to send the boys away. Speeches were delivered by Generals Harman and Harper, prayers were offered, the band played, and the train moved eastward to a supposedly secret destination, which everyone know to be Harper's Ferry. In reality, in view of the haste with which the movement was inaugurated, its progress was almost anticlimactic. The train traveled first to Gordonsville, then north by the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, where the young soldiers transferred to cars on the Manassas Gap Railroad for Strasgburg. From that point they marched north to Winchester and then entrained on the Harper's Ferry Railroad. Finally they arrived at Harper's Ferry at four in the morning of April 19, thirty-six hours after departure. Long before that, the Union garrison had set fire to the buildings and fled."
"Augusta County of course had its share of rumors and near-panics. In August 1863 the raid guard rushed to Buffalo Gap and remained three days in the rain, only to learn that it all was a false alarm. In December the militia regiment marched to Harrisonburg to thwart an invasion that never materialized. But May 1864 really initiated the greatest commotion. With news that Sigel's Union army was approaching from the north, the VMI Corps marched through here May 12, stopping over-night to be feted at a dance in Staunton. Breckinridge brought his array of troops, and all converged at New Market to rout the invaders May 15. Contrary to precedent, the frustrated enemy refused to lie quiescent. Within ten days tidings arrived that a new general, Hunter, was leading the Federals south in the Valley. Imboden published a valorous appeal for volunteers; the reserve regiment was mobilized; railroad trains brought soldiers from southwest Virginia and Tennessee. For by June 2, Hunter and his mighty army had occupied Harrisonburg and Imboden with almost a ragtag force was confronting him along North River near Mount Crawford. By Saturday, June 4 all of General Grumble Jones's three regiments had arrived, and he took command."
"But General Hunter refused to meet his opponents at Mount Crawford and sidled instead east toward Port Republic. To counter this new approach, Jones marched his infantry back across Middle River to Piedmont, While Imboden's cavalry picketed fords on North River. When on Sunday morning the Federals began their march south from Port Republic, Imboden and his brother, a colonel (George W. Imboden), blocked the way; and a delaying action was waged from Mount Meridian. It was not until noon that the Union army was in position at Piedmont, 10,000 soldiers confronting hardly more than 4,000. Jones selected a fair position, but his troop disposition was faulty; somehow he had detached his cavalry and possessed only infantry to meet the assaults. With breastworks of fence rails, his infantry did drive back three heavy attacks, inflicting serious casualties. In fact, so severe were the counterattacks that Hunter ordered his wagon train turned around preparatory for retreat. Unfortunately for the Confederates, though, Hunter's left flank commander found a wooded alley to launch an assault on Jones's right flank; and the result was a debacle. General Grumble Jones was killed, as were Commonwealth Attorney Doyle and several other prominent citizens. More than a thousand were taken prisoner; and Imboden, with the wreck of an army, retired first to Fisherville and then to Waynesboro and the Blue Ridge Tunnel."
The following from the same Volume is a reflection on noted Generals of the Civil War, "Probably the most interestingly controversial of our generals was John D. Imboden, a highly intelligent but intensely argumentative man. Born near Waynesboro, he became a lawyer and was involved in almost every civic enterprise here. He commanded the Staunton Artillery when the war broke out. According to his own story, when at Harper's Ferry he ordered those men of his battery who were willing to volunteer for the duration to step forward on pace, all but three did so, and he placed the three under arrest for insubordination until they saw the light; within ten minutes he could boast that his was the first company so to volunteer. After organizing a cavalry brigade, he was promoted brigadier general. In late 1864 he was transferred to Georgia to command a prisoner-of-war encampment. He did not return to Staunton but engaged in mining ventures in southwest Virginia. He was married five times. Shortly before his death he patented a steam motor for propelling streetcars."
John filed six different patents as follows:
Patent Description Date
162,073 Car-axle box April 13, 1875

170,374 Railway-car lifter November 23, 1875
182,673 Car-axle September 26, 1876

was born on Feb 18, 1841 in Staunton, Augusta Co, VA.2,3,7,14 He was listed as the head in the census on Jun 11, 1860 taken in Augusta Co, VA. He was listed as a household member in the census on Aug 20, 1870 taken in Henrico Co, VA. He was listed as the head in the census in Jun 1900 taken in Washington Co, VA. He died on Jun 7, 1929 in Roanoke, Washington Co, VA.3 He was buried in Jun 1929 in East Hill Cemetery, Bristol VA.3From research by Mr. T. G. Hobbs, Frank was educated at V.M.I. in Lexington, Virginia and served as Capt. of H Company of the 18th Virginia Cavalry of the Confederate army during the war of the states. The 1860 census lists him as a student. He was captured at the battle of Piedmont and was a prisoner of war held at Johnson's Island. He was later exchanged and freed (Conquest of a Valley, by Marshall M. Brice, 1965). For about 3 years after the war, Frank was Captain of Richmond Blues, a regiment considered to be Virginia's crack regiment during the war.
The 1870 census shows Frank was a real estate agent but in the early 1800's he and other Virginians, his nephew Frank Howard Imboden, Dr. George Ben Johnson of Richmond, Virginia, Dr. St. John of Bristol, Piulham Blackford of Abingdon, Dr. Gold, about 30 in all, went to Honduras Central America where Captain Imboden was to build a railroad. He built the first railroad across the continent and established a water system in Leguciagalpa (sp?) and other cities there. He became friends with President Bogram (sp?) for whose government he was doing this work. In the revolution against the government, the Americans fought vigorously in the defense of President Bogram (sp?). The city was wrecked in the four days Sanchez was in power and much of Captain Imboden's work there demolished. It was a terrible experience for his wife and children, who had come to live there. He shipped them home at once and as soon as he could wind up his affairs he also returned. His nephew, Frank Howard remained to look after his investments there and after his father's death made Honduras his home.
